There are so many options these days for where to spend your bondage dollar. As a seasoned custom commissioner, I'm treating this question in terms of custom requests, but the same criteria apply for the simple purchase of a video that someone else has devised, except that the gamble of $10 on an unknown studio or model is not so great as for $400 on a custom clip.
The model or models taking part is increasingly the main factor for me. Obviously, every model was new to you at some point, but I find the presence of someone I've seen before and know what to expect from, makes the choice easier. And some (who may have the initials RA) are just brilliant whatever you give them...
Nice though it is to see pretty women struggling in bondage and mmpphh-ing into their gags, I much prefer to have a plot, i.e. some reason for the aforementioned women to get tied up. Having said that, viewers of some of my customs will know that such a plot won't necessarily be particularly realistic, although some sort of internal logic and consistency is desirable.
Clothing choices are very important. The model will be attractive to me, her clothes need to be attractive to me, too. I make no apology for the fact that this will more often than not mean that lots of cleavage and leg will be on display, high heels will be worn even if the situation would suggest otherwise, and little of the clothing will remain on the model by the end. So sue me.
Surprisingly perhaps, the actual bondage isn't at the top of my list. As long as I know there will be some, there will be some variety, it will be competently applied and the damsel(s) will struggle nicely in it, I don't get too wound up about the intricacy of the rope work, how many loops of tape are used, how many layers the gag will have. So, a hog-tie/a chair-tie with hands behind and legs apart/a rope spreadeagle, and a ball-gag/a bit-gag/a cleave-gag are sufficient detail.
Lastly (for now), while I like a bondagette to be a bad girl/domme who ties up other damsels from time to time, I consider it a waste to have (e.g.) Cadence in a clip if she's not going to be bound and gagged at least once, even if her main role is to kidnap and keep Jasmine a nicely trussed-up prisoner for most of the time. Hence, the tried-and-trusted 'turnabout' or 'betrayal' scenario always plays well here.

I tend to look more towards the custom area when determining which studio, producer, and/or model I would choose and recommend. Therefore, GB2691 and I are on the same page, it seems. I do purchase individual videos, like during BiB's various Sales Events, but these are through known studios and producers. I have been burned too many times in the past with trashy videos that did not meet the expectations of the descriptions when I was first purchasing videos.
My criteria would be to look for a good quality producer and studio. There are many out there. However, there are many to be wary of and avoid, in my opinion. Models are important if the studio is unknown. If wanting to try out a studio, go with a model you know puts on a good performance. If her performance is sub-par with this producer, it is more likely to be the producer's fault. Dave allows his models to shine and be the center of his stories. Some producers want themselves to be the center of the story and the model to be an accessory.
