Discussion about 4K videos

Post by davidnorth »

Because Alba's latest was recorded for me in 4K, I decided to release a 4K version on Clips4Sale to see how it performed against the 1080p version. I am quite surprised to find that the 4K version accounts for 35% of the sales, which are split between 1080p MP4, 1080p WMV, and 4K. For videos of reasonable length (say less than half an hour), I am considering making 4K a fairly regular feature on Clips4Sale. I don't want to do this in my own stores at present owning to the size of the 4K files, which would soon cause disc space issues for me if coupled with 1080p releases.

The down side for me is that, with my current computer power, rendering a 25-minute 4K video takes about 8 hours, followed by almost as long to export it. This makes it an overnight operation, so clearly I could not do it continuously for every release.

This processing time would be reduced significantly if I got myself a much more powerful computer which can properly handle 4K videos, but the expense is non-trivial, leaning towards about $10,000 if I want enough processors to speed up the work flow and plenty of disc space to handle the massive work files generated by Final Cut Pro. I therefore hesitate because this outlay would take quite a while to pay for itself.

I am also conscious that not everyone wants 4K videos. I had one person writing to me last month about producing 720p videos again because his computer can't handle 1080p!

With more and more hardware able to handle very high definition files, the time is coming when 4K sales will dominate the market. We're not there yet, but it is certainly time to create more 4K content for sale. It does mean that I should stop using my older camera which can only record in 1080p; mixing in contributions from both cameras and exporting at 4K would create some very uneven results.

My machine doesn't handle 4K very well, so I'd be in no hurry, but it'll be the standard in short order, I'm sure.
Thinking back 20 years or so to dial-up connections (ask your Grandad, kids :D), the idea of downloading even 100MB files in less than a day (or ever, given dropout rates), seemed pretty fanciful.

My hope is for live streams in 16K from the B-in-B studios, so that we can see the magic happen in real time and in 'better than real-life' detail.

So everyone get buying clips and commissioning videos so that new monster processor can be purchased!

I still remember the Commodore 64 and the 64 Kb hard drive of memory.
